Country number four: Malaysia. A ferry from Thailand, and the paradise-like island of Langkawi welcomed me. Alor Setar, with its coconuts and warm guesthouses. Kuala Lumpur, the great metropolis. Malacca, where layers of history lie one upon another. And Christmas in Johor Bahru.
Country number five: Singapore. Riding side by side once again with a Singaporean cycle traveler I had met back in Alor Setar. Together, we slowly pedaled through a city that felt somehow like a theme park.
